The term “nickel alloys” refers to a broad group of metals, all of which contain nickel as the principal element. The additional elements found in the material composition depend on the specific alloy but can include chromium, copper, iron, and molybdenum. When used in manufacturing applications, general advantages include corrosion resistance, thermal resistance, and strength.

Types of Nickel Alloys
There are a number of nickel alloys available, each of which demonstrates unique material properties. Some of the most common include:
- Nickel iron alloys, such as Kovar®, Invar, Alloy 48 (48% nickel), Alloy 49 (49% nickel), and Alloy 50 (50% nickel). These materials are also sometimes referred to as controlled expansion alloys, as they expand at a predictable rate—a quality that makes it easy to account for thermal change during the part design stage. Typical applications include hermetically sealing cans and other enclosures and projects involving microwave or radio frequency (RF).
- Nickel 200. Also known as Alloy 200, this is a commercially pure wrought material containing over 99% nickel. It demonstrates excellent mechanical properties across a broad temperature range, is resistant to corrosion, and has high electrical conductivity.
- Hy-Mu 80 and MuMetal. Hy-Mu 80 is an alloy often used in the production of soft-magnetic shielding. It contains 80% nickel and 20% iron, making it heavier than some of the other alloys. MuMetal is similar to Hy-Mu but demonstrates greater material hardness.
Benefits of Working With Nickel Alloys
There are several benefits to using nickel alloys, including:
- Excellent mechanical properties. In general, nickel alloys demonstrate high strength, durability, and suitability for high-temperature environments.
- Corrosion resistant properties. The presence of nickel inherently affords nickel alloys with corrosion resistance. The addition of other elements, such as chromium, can further enhance the material’s resistance to corrosion for a broader range of temperatures.
- Shielding properties. Magnetic fields can cause significant damage to electronic equipment. Nickel alloys with higher nickel contents tend to have higher permeability, which makes them well-suited for shielding sensitive electronics from low-frequency magnetic fields. Shielding that combines nickel with iron or another ferrous material can protect equipment from even stronger fields.
